WHO WE ARE
The Gloucester Museum Foundation (GMF) was organized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 1992, and was originally known as the Gloucester County Friends of the Museum. Today, we serve as the tax-deductible conduit for contributions to the Gloucester Museum of History. Over the years, the GMF has supported exhibitions, education programs such as living history and summer camps, and community outreach.
Our mission is to generate private and public funds to enhance and perpetuate the programs, exhibits, collections, and historic sites managed by Gloucester County.
ABOUT THE GLOUCESTER MUSEUM OF HISTORY
Owned and operated by Gloucester County as part of their Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism, the Gloucester Museum of History is the only centralized repository of historic artifacts and information in Gloucester. Welcoming thousands of locals and tourists annually, the museum strives to engage, educate, and inspire current and future generations through the collection, preservation, and interpretation of the diverse heritage, history, and culture of Gloucester County.
Since 2000, the main public galleries, collection storage, and office areas have been housed within the Botetourt Building, a tavern constructed in 1770. The museum campus also contains the adjacent historic buildings within the Court Circle including the 1766 Court House, Debtor’s Prison (1824), Jail (1880), and two 19th-century Clerk of Court offices. The museum is located at 6539 Main Street, Gloucester, Virginia 23061. It is free and open to the public Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
FISCAL YEAR 2023 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Supporter,
The past year was exciting and impactful! We helped host numerous educational programs for adults and students and continued the tradition of free living history weekends featuring cannon and musket firings. These types of opportunities reach thousands of guests across the region and help to bring history to life!
2023 was also a year of growth for our non-profit. The Friends of the Museum changed its name to the Gloucester Museum Foundation (GMF). The new name more accurately reflects our mission as the official non-profit supporting the Gloucester Museum of History.
We hope you enjoy our first annual report and that you continue to support the museum. We look forward to seeing you in 2024!
Danny Fary,
President
